written by Indrajit Lahiri March 4, 2024

We have an enduring love affair with tea, and their affection for this beverage is deeply ingrained in their culture. From morning rituals to evening gatherings, tea holds a special place in Bengali households, symbolizing warmth, hospitality, and togetherness.

One of the most cherished varieties of tea among Bengalis is Darjeeling Tea. Renowned for its exquisite flavor and aroma, Darjeeling Tea is cultivated in the picturesque hills of Darjeeling, West Bengal. Its delicate muscatel notes and floral undertones make it a favorite choice for tea enthusiasts worldwide. Whether enjoyed alone or paired with delectable Bengali delicacies, Darjeeling Tea is an integral part of Bengali culinary traditions, evoking a sense of nostalgia and comfort with every sip.

After an agonizing eight-hour delay in Kolkata, we finally boarded our flight to Bagdogra. The extended wait tested our patience, but the excitement of reaching our destination kept us hopeful throughout the ordeal. As we soared above the clouds, leaving the city behind, the delay seemed like a distant memory, replaced by anticipation for the adventures awaiting us in Bagdogra.

The Tea-Testing and The Different Flushes

Mr. Sparsh Agarwal, a tea aficionado and connoisseur, graciously welcomed us into his tea-tasting session, where he delighted us with an array of tea varieties from different flushes. With expertise honed over years of experience, Mr. Agarwal guided us through a sensory journey, unveiling the subtle nuances and unique characteristics of each tea.

As we savored the delicate flavors of the first flush, Mr. Agarwal shared insights into its light, floral notes, reminiscent of the fresh blooms of spring. With each sip, we were transported to the misty hills of Darjeeling, where the first flush tea leaves were carefully plucked at the onset of the season, capturing the essence of nature’s renewal.

Transitioning to the second flush, Mr. Agarwal introduced us to teas with a fuller body and a distinctive muscatel flavor profile. With a deep amber hue and a rich, fruity aroma, these teas captivated our senses, evoking images of sun-drenched hillsides and golden-hued landscapes.

Throughout the tasting, Mr. Agarwal’s passion for tea was palpable, as he regaled us with stories of the tea gardens and the meticulous craftsmanship that goes into producing each flush. From the delicate first flush to the robust autumnal harvest, Mr. Agarwal’s expertise illuminated the beauty and complexity of Darjeeling Tea, leaving us with a newfound appreciation for this revered beverage.

Dorje Tea Factory

Our visit to the tea factory at Dorje Tea Estate was a fascinating experience that offered us a glimpse into the intricate process of tea production. Stepping into the factory, we were greeted by the soothing aroma of freshly processed tea leaves, signaling the start of our immersive journey.

Guided by knowledgeable staff members, we embarked on a comprehensive tour of the facility, witnessing each stage of tea processing firsthand. From the withering and rolling of the leaves to the oxidation and drying processes, every step was executed with precision and care, ensuring the highest quality standards.

As we observed the machinery in action and listened to explanations about the various techniques employed, we gained a newfound appreciation for the craftsmanship and dedication that goes into producing Darjeeling Tea. The tour also provided us with insights into the rich history and heritage of tea cultivation in the region, further deepening our understanding of this beloved beverage.

Lunch at a tea worker’s house at the Dorje Tea

In the afternoon, we had the privilege of visiting a tea worker’s house, immersing ourselves in the warmth and hospitality of the local community. Welcomed with warmth, we were invited to partake in a traditional meal prepared with love and care.

We shared stories and laughter as we savored the flavors of authentic local cuisine. From steaming bowls of dal and fragrant rice to savory vegetable dishes bursting with spices, each bite was a celebration of the region’s rich culinary heritage.

As we dined with our gracious hosts, we gained a deeper appreciation for the hard work and resilience of the tea workers who labor tirelessly in the fields. Their generosity and kindness touched our hearts, leaving an indelible impression of warmth and camaraderie that transcended language and cultural barriers.

Leaving the tea worker’s house with full hearts and satisfied appetites, we carried with us not only the memories of a delicious meal but also a profound sense of gratitude for the opportunity to connect with the vibrant community that calls Dorje Tea Estate home.

The Crunch of Evening

As the evening descended upon Dorje Tea Estate, we gathered for an informal adda session with Mr. Sparsh Agarwal, accompanied by a delightful spread of snacks showcasing the region’s culinary delights. Nestled in a cozy corner, we shared laughter and conversation while indulging in a variety of treats, each one more tempting than the last.

The star of the evening was undoubtedly the momos, steaming hot and bursting with flavorful fillings, served alongside spicy dipping sauces that tantalized our taste buds. We also sampled phale, a local favorite made from flattened rice mixed with meaty filling offering a delightful contrast of textures and flavors.

To complement our savory snacks, Mr. Agarwal surprised us with a special treat – tea leaves pakoras. Crispy on the outside and tender on the inside, these fritters were a creative twist on traditional pakoras, showcasing the versatility of tea leaves in culinary applications.

A night with hills

Under the blanket of stars, we gathered for a night of camaraderie and relaxation, accompanied by a crackling bonfire and the comforting warmth of rum. With Mr. Sparsh Agarwal leading the way, our group settled into a circle, sharing stories and laughter as the flames danced before us.

As the night air grew cooler, the flickering glow of the bonfire cast a mesmerizing spell, creating an intimate ambiance that encouraged open conversation and genuine connections. With each sip of rum, we toasted to friendship and shared experiences, reveling in the simple joys of companionship and togetherness.

Against the backdrop of the night sky, illuminated by a canopy of twinkling stars, our adda session took on a magical quality, transcending time and space. Amidst the crackling of the fire and the gentle rustle of leaves, we found solace in each other’s company, forging bonds that would endure long after the embers had faded.

As the night wore on and the flames dwindled to glowing embers, we reluctantly bid farewell to our evening of revelry, knowing that the memories we had created would linger in our hearts forever. With gratitude for the moments shared and the friendships forged, we retreated to our restful slumber, cherishing the warmth of the bonfire and the camaraderie of our night adda with Mr. Sparsh Agarwal and company.
