If you’re a true-blue Kolkattan, in all probability, you’ve been to the College Street Coffee house. The coffee is not great, but then who cared? But the city is changing rapidly and so is its cityscape, Coffee House, New Town is the new to-be-place in Kolkata. And let me clear it to you, this IS NOT related to the College Street Coffee House. The name is inspired by it and food and pricing are quite similar. But, there’s no similarity. So, this blog post is about New Town Coffee House.
How to go and rather, how to get inside
Well, the location is a bit off-track for someone new to New Town. One needs to find Amity University and New Town Coffee house is bang opposite to it. As per my knowledge, the only public transport is the local auto and toto service there, apart from cabs. You need to take the next lane to the huge Westin Hotel and follow the public road signages. There’s plenty of parking space, so nothing to worry about. Please check the location on the google map here.
Okay, but it’s easy to reach the New Town Coffee house, but for getting in, you’ll need to pre-book your slot via the BookMyShow app. Please check the screenshots below for a clearer understanding. The entry fee is 20/- per head non-redeemable. But, considering the facility and pricing, it seemed okay to me. Timing is 12-7 PM on all days, except Mondays.
Inside the New Town Coffee House
Once inside, there are two floors at New Town Coffee house with quite a good number of sitting arrangements. Now, as the entry is pre-booked the tension of now getting a chair is not here. New Town Coffee House has an AC interior with a proper good toilet facility. There’s a small study area (on the ground floor) near the window with quite a good selection of books. Plenty of sunlight and large windows- it has a good vibe all around the place. There is a beautiful wall-art offering a tribute to the classic coffee house song by Manna Dey and it felt good. Uniforms for the waiters is similar to the old place.
About the food
Honestly, though I’ve been visiting the place for the last two decades, I do not have a very good experience of GOOD food at the College Street Coffee House. The food is average and at times, below average. But considering the pricing, ambiance, and legacy, it felt legitimate. And I do not know of anybody who goes to Coffee House for the same. New town Coffee House has a similar pricing structure. The cost for two should be around 300-400/- on the higher side. Please check the pricing here.
The sandwich at the old Coffee house was my favorite, and so is it here. But the only difference is they serve it grilled here. The rest of the food items are quite decent (not mind-blowing) considering the pricing. I was invited there on the inauguration date and on Foodka Shoot. So, we were hosted by the NKDA authority on both occasions. but considering the price and ambiance, one shouldn’t expect much- honestly.
As I said, Kolkata is not about only the heritage buildings and old memories- the city is changing. The city is changing rapidly and so is the landscape. Do visit New Town Coffee house and share your experience in the comments section.
Bon Appetit !!!
