Smoke House Deli is a not-so-new food joints in Kolkata, which has been able to secure a place in Kolkata’s varied food scenario. Its basically an all-day cafe with exceptional service put in. The menu includes almost everything bread to pancakes, steak to coffee… you name it and these guys seem to have it. However, we were invited along with friends of KFB for an interaction with their master chef for a live cooking demo and menu tasting session.
Its located on Quest Mall, Kolkata top floor and operates all day. The decor is funky yet very chick depicting different aspects of Kolkata sketched on their walls. However, the first pleasant shock of the session came in when I tasted the water, it smelled nicely of citrus food. And upon enquiring, we were told that as a standard practice, its done so, and it was good- really. Shortly, chef was introduced to us and from scratch, penne with Tomato-vodka sauce was prepared. It was a great learning session, but being a foodie, frankly and shamelessly, I was loking more towards the menu tasting session.
The items came flooding in and all of them were great. But, I would defnitely link to mention couple of items as a must-try dishes. The first one is the burnt corn soup. Its a purely veg dish, but in recent times, I doubt when I’ve come across such a brilliant veg soup. It was having subtle corn taste with just the right amount of burnt flavor put in. The texture and color was perfect. Paired with some freshly crushed black peeper, it was pure heaven.
The next item was the grilled red snapper fillet on potato bed. The fish was damn fresh and the crunchiness was there. Smoked chicken sandwich came later, which was the showstopper of the day. The bread was just perfect- ample chicken with the typical smoky flavor (remember the joint’s name ? ) and a great presentation…. Possibly what could go wrong ?
Other items included the soba noodle salad (great), Tri-colored polenta cake with curried chickpeas (ok-ish) and penne again.
The dessert platter had a nice citric food tart, a coffee flavored mousse with fried-muri base (yes, you read it right and it was brilliant) and a carrot walnut cake.
Overall, it was a very satisfying experience. The price normally here is a little steep (a meal for 2 should cost around 2000/-) but considering the quality and service, indulgence at some point of time is fine. So, go ahead and gorge in….
Bon apetite !!!
