Love is in the air- its spring time and more importantly its THE valentine’s day-time of the year. And Kolkata being one of the foodie’s paradise in India, how can we be left behind. Well, top cut a long story short, I was invited for a new product launch of one of the most promising momo chains around- wow momo, in their behala outlet.
Wow momo is the brainchild o 2 young entrepreneurs from Kolkata. Once they just passed out of their college, they thought of getting into the food business and one of them, being from nepal, the wow momo was initiated. That’s a 6 year old story and now, they have got over 25 outlets spread over 5 cities. Now, that’s some success story- inspiring- eh ? So, is their momo- don’t worry- coming to it.
How to go and when to go ?
The wow momo behala outlet is 5 minutes walking distance from Behala police station along diamond harbor road towards behala bazar. Its on the main road and very much findable. The formal address is 355, diamond harbor road, behala, kolkata. BTW, I’ve seen their branches in saltlake CC1 and sector 5 also, so please don;t worry about travelling to behala. They are open on all days- standard timing
Ambience and service:
This is basically a take-away joint with a cozy sit-out area tucked behind. The sit-out is having AC and decent furniture. The service is prompt and courteous – and most importantly, hygenic. The wall is nicely decorated with different paintings and their slogans and also tempting photographs of the dishes available.
Now, we were present there for their new dish-to-be-launced, heart shaped-chocolate-momo. Sounds a bit weird- isn’t it ? But, looks grand and if your GF is kinda food-crazy, the looks of it surely is bound to sweep her off. It comes 2 pcs in a portion, grated dark chocolate stuffed inside steamed momos- sprinkled generously with grated chocolate and seasoned with chocolate syrup- toooo chcolaty- I say !!! But one bite into it and the thing is awesome.
This item is specially available in all their outlets from 13th – 15th Feb only. and costs 50/- per portion. Shared among 2, this is quite filling.
But, boys can’t live only on chocolates, unlike women and hence, next came a plethora of their other items and I must say, I am quite amused by their R&D. We were served with fish pan-fried momo, prawn fried momo, chicken-cheese steamed momo, momo-burger and thukpa (they don’t serve pork).
The chicken-cheese momo is brilliant, quite filling and heavy in size and tasted really good- even my son liked them really and is sure to be a big hit. All their momo comes with 2 chutneys – the red one (sadly not-so-spicy) and a nice green (mint/ coriander ??) chutney.
Pan-fried fish momo and prawn fried momo were good, nothing special except for the untraditional fillings and were a welcome change in the scenario and mostly caters to the non-chicken-eating crowd.
The momo-burger was nothing but a fried momo stuffed between a burger bun with mayo and vegetables. Its good to look-at and conceptually also tastes good. This is a huge hit among young generation of today.
The last item, Thukpa was frankly a disaster. Its unlike the full-bodied one we’re so used to having in other joints. If you think this as a noodle soup, it’ll probably pass, but as thukpa….. ahem !!! But the other items are so good, this can easily be forgiven.
Below are the men who are behind this super-successful venture- the owner of the chain with his 2 best men- the chef and the business head.
All-in-all, this is a great experience and the many youngsters are bound to get proposed and accepted by their chocolate momo- wish they would someday make it among their regular menu. Till then, keep eating !!!
Bon apetite !!!
