Silver screen restaurant, the movie themed neo-oriental fine-dining place in salt lake

written by Indrajit Lahiri April 13, 2015

We stay in the eastern part of the city called Beliaghata and salt lake is just our next-door-thing. Now, for long, we were searching for a good oriental/ chinese restaurant who does not cut compromise on quality and at the same time does not cut into our pocket also….. The search was going on for long and we landed up in the newly opened neo-oriental restaurant in salt lake, The Sliver Screen.

How to go and when to go:-

This is just at the backside of saltlake stadium beside AMRI. There used to be one of the first supermarkets in Kolkata named Charnock’s which later changed itself into a fine dining restaurant among other activities. This one is at the first floor of the same. KB-26, salt lake. Its open from noon – 1030 PM on all days. We however went on a weekday dinner. The parking place is shared, but huge.

Interior and welcoming:

The interior is bright, vibrant and cheerful. The chairs are on multiple colors which added a young touch to the whole place. Movie posters and food related shots are hung on walls, on which my son recognized the kung-fu panda and was very happy. As we settled in, complementary chinese jasmine tea was served. The tea is of very high quality and a fragrant one. The table-mats, we found out are different scenes from movies all around the world related to food. These are changed from time-to-time, as the management confirmed. The bar-counter is finished but they’ll start operating liquors soon.

We ordered lemon coriander seafood soup first and it was a revelation. Unlike other places, it was of coriander pulp and not, some chopped leaves, which had made all the difference and in every spoon, we got a mouthful of prawn and fish. My boy loved it and so did us. The confidence on this place was starting to settle in.

Next, we had Crispy fried fish, barbequed fish and ho behold, fried chilly pork. Seeing the menu card, I was literally jumping with joy that at last, some chinese joint in salt lake (other than chowman) started serving pork. God bless these restaurateurs who hear the prayer for persons like us…..

The crispy fried fish had a coating with cornflakes (kellogs) and was served with a wonderful plum sauce. They serve 6 big pieces in one portion and is pretty good to be divided among 3 persons. Plum sauce made a great accompaniment.

Next was the Fried Chilly pork. Now, as many of us knows, pork can be served with or without fat in the pieces. Personally I prefer lean meat without fat and luckily they serve just that. A little less spicy as per my taste, but good for regular guests, the dish was awesome. Needless, to say, my son was more interested to have the vegetable carving than the meat and I didn’t mind actually.

Next item was barbequed fish, as suggested by the management. This dish was without the coating and tossed in barbeque sauce. It was pretty tasty, but crispy fried fish won among these two.

For the main course, we ordered seafood fried rice, leek and shitake noodles and shrimp in schezwan sauce.

The fried rice was pretty good, non-oily and having lots of sea-food. Noodles was a revelation. I did not personally had anywhere shitake mushroom tossed with noodles. But, it made a pretty good combination. The crunchiness of shitake went pretty well with the soft noodles and was a good experience. Shrimp with schezwan sauce was above-average at the best. Maybe because, we like all our side dishes dry-styled and what we had here was gravy-styled made me come out with this remark. The quantity for all these were huge. One fried rice/ noodles can easily serve 2 heavy eaters and they served a good number of shrimps in the dish.

We were almost full but the management said the specialty of the joint was fried icecream and gave us one on-the-house. It was brilliant. Just the right amount of crispiness outside and soft icecream inside. They serve the same in a martini glass and 2 scoops in a portion.

Fried icecream

Overall, the whole experience was pretty good and very much value-for-money. The pricing is quite reasonable, amount is quite heavy and taste-wise authentic. The good part: they don’t cook with excessive amount of oil and sauce, which is good for health.

Will I go again ?

Definitely, you bet.

Bon Apetite !!!
