Kolkata book fair and a foodie

Kolkata Bookfair is an emotion. A place where many friendships are established, many promises are made and generations are introduced to the habit of reading. I have a book, which I’ve written and this year, I was expected to be present at the Kolkata Bookfair. So, being a glutton, when I was looking for the food recommendations there, I thought of writing this blogpost. Please note that this post will have loads of pictures- of mostly well-known eateries for you to choose your stuff. Reading is important, I understand. But once you plan on spending a full day there, food also is no less important.

Bookfair story

In 1974, the concept of Kolkata Bookfair was getting formed by few young publishers, much against the will of the aged ones. And in 1975, the publishers and Booksellers guild was formed with Mr. Sushil Mukherjea as its founder President and Jayant Manaktala became its first General Secretary. the first fair was organized with just 56 stalls of 34 publishers at Maidan. Just to give a perspective, this year, Kolkata bookfair has grown by leaps and bounds with more than 580+ publishers and 400+ stalls. The location is also changed to the Mela Ground, Salt Lake Karunamoyee, opposite to Vidyut Bhaban.

The food court

for any self-respecting Kolkattan, food is an integral part of life. And Kolkata Bookfair is no exception. The usual stalls are also there this year, but I’ve seen something new and beautiful. They have done 2 kiosks for Waste management at the food court, Kolkata Bookfair. The food wastes including paper plates etc are getting collected in large containers and that has kept the premises clean. Like every year, Kolkata Police has organized for clean drinking water pouches for public and unless and until you’re super-fussy, it serves the purpose.

A few things from my side … the Kashmir Kahva at 40/- for one glass is pretty good (if you’re not expecting the taste of Kashmir water in Kolkata) and the Paan wala is super camera-friendly. As usual, Royal Biryani is super tasty and the fish fry from Digha Fish stall, which I’ve tasted, was pretty decent.
