Yellow Straw- the juicy juice center

written by Indrajit Lahiri February 25, 2019
Juice at Yellow Straw

We Kolkattans have some typical characteristics. I apologise to take the liberty to generalise, but I do have. We do not take fruit juice seriously. During my childhood, somehow I didn’t get into the habit of eating fruits on a daily basis. And fruit juice was not really a suave popular food item for my family. But with the new health conscious Kolkata, people are looking for good quality fruit juice. And thus comes the story of Yellow Straw- for fresh cold pressed fresh fruit juice.

Jab we met

I first met Piyush Kankaria and Vikram Khinwasara a few years back at a few business forums in Kolkata. A young man supremely convinced of making Kolkata fall in love with good quality fruit juice. The idea didn’t really click to me. After all, I was used to either those roadside sugarcane/ Musambi juice or the packaged fruit juice. But a juice parlour in Kolkata- seemed pretty far-fetched. But, once I went to one of his juice stalls (by sheer chance), I understood what he was talking about. And from that time, I became quite regular.

Yellow straw is basically a QSR- quick service restaurant. Once someone places an order, fresh juice is squeezed in the cold press method in front of him/ her and served. Mostly they operate with stalls with hardly any sitting capacity, but the outlet near Minto Park, on Lansdowne Road, is a big one with AC sitting inside.

What’s the fuss about

Now what is a cold pressed juice ? Here the juice is extracted using the mascating juicing technology, without the use of blade type juicers. If we want to knock off the jargons, this juice is full of the nutrients and vitamins from the fruits and because of the slow squeezing technology, they are free from oxidation. No water is added and even ice or taste enhancers like rock salt are used only on request. And finally, the variety is amazing.

Some seasonal juice

So I’ve tasted their varieties over a number of times and hence, would like to discuss few of my favorites. The first one is Orange pomegranate juice. It has got the sweetness of pomegranate and typical sweet-sour taste of orange. Naturally, it’s seasonal- as good quality oranges are not easy to source throughout the year. And the next one definitely would be the Pure Apple Juice. It’s served in short cups. The color reminded me of my experience in Manali and even the color at Yellow Straw was just the same.

And some complex juice

The next one was the signature item of Yellow Straw and a pretty complex one. It’s Strawberry Grape Watermelon Pineapple special. The taste is complex and I like it with the addition of a pinch of rock salt. It’s a strong drink and I personally feel, it’ll go well with some vodka. But Yellow Straw is a juice store and so be it. And the second one is Kiwi Green-Chilly Pineapple Juice. Well, I know, pineapple is my weakness but this combination works really well for me- each and every time. Now, let me warn you, both of these drinks are strong ones and not suitable for the light-hearted. The punch is good and is definitely suitable for that extra zing.

Some solids to go along …

But I guess how good the juices are, it’s necessary to have a few other solid items as well. And thus there is the fruit salad and Choco Berry Sundae. The fruit salad bowl is quite a heavy one and satisfies my lunch. Please remember, by no means, I’m a fruit lover. But still somehow once a while I like this dish. The choco Berry Sundae, on the other hand, is good as a healthy dessert and comes in a nice handy jar.

I’ve seen some sandwich and pasta in their menu, but frankly have never tried them- so no comments. Overall, if someone is searching for a good premium quality fruit juice center in Kolkata, Yellow Straw, with their 10 outlets, is the place and the product speaks for itself. If it can make me, a big-time carnivore, like fruit juice, they must be doing something right. And Yellow Straw juices are available on food delivery apps as well.

BTW, do you like fruit juice ? What’s your choice ? Do let me know in the comment section …

** Disclaimer: I’ve tasted juice from Yellow Straw on multiple occassions, but the photos were taken by me once I went there on invite from Piyush **
