Whacky Waffles

written by Indrajit Lahiri May 12, 2015

Unusual things are coming to Kolkata- I mean gastronomically. Around 10 years back, who could have thought of such food varieties here ? Thanks to the new-age restauranteurs, we’re having a lot more options nowadays to pamper our taste-buds. Take example of the new kid on the block- Whacky Waffle- the dedicated waffle kiosk.

Waffle is basically one of the most popular food items in and around Netherlands, Belgium, Poland and surrounding area- quite popular in USA even. Its leavened dough cooked between 2 hot plates to give it a special pattern/ design and filled/ topped with various fillings.

Kolkata gets its first dedicated Waffla kiosk this year at Whacky waffles serving 17 sweet and 3 savory variants. Sadly, its only veg as of now.

How to go and when to go:

They’re a small kiosk (quite visible though with the color of Belgium flag in their logo) just beside brand factory, near back gate of Forum mall on Lee Road. They’re open on the standard time. 11 – 10 on all days.

Food:

They serve mainly waffles (all veg- sadly) with 17 sweet and 3 savory variants, varieties of shakes and coolers and standard tit-bits like french fries etc.

We were invited there from Kolkata Food bloggers #KFB and they served us some really yummy waffles with lots of coolers to gulp it down. Thankfully, their menu card is quite elaborate with all the fancy names de-mystified with the items.

Tropical delight Tropical delight 2

First we had Tropical delight. It was waffle with strawberry filling, fresh pineapple slices, icing sugar sprinkled and whipped cream on top. With hot waffle base, it tasted just yummy.

Nutella monkey Berry merry

Next was Nutella Monkey (Nutella spread, banana slices and whipped cream) and Berry Merry (Strawberry filling, icing sugar and whipped cream). Between these two, nutella flavor didn’t suit me much whereas Berry Merry was yummy.

Salsa on the couch Salsa on the couch 2

I am not basically someone with a sweet-tooth, so the next item, thankfully was Salsa-on-the-couch. This had potato cooked in salsa sauce and herbs. It was good, but probably the sweet variants were even more tastier- even for me (veggie effect ??? – maybe).

Awesome 3some Belgian alaska

The last items were awesome 3some (chocolae sauce and 3 scoops of ice-cream- how they melted with the warmth of the hot waffle- wah !!!) and Belgian Alaska (Icing sugar, vanilla ice-cream and honey/ maple syrup and some chopped dry fruit sprinkled). This belgian alaska is definitely best of the lot and definitely recommended- not that others are not.

For the food-sharing-groups, they have a waffle-on-the-stick which turned out to be pretty much pocket-friendly and awesome.

To gulp it all down, they offered us coolers which were above-average.

Will I go again ?

Hell yes. Where else in Kolkata wold I get these fresh, hot waffles- that too pocket-friendly. Definitely recommended to cheer a dull evening or an after-dinner dessert.

Bon apetite !!!
