Recently, there is a strange trend in Kolkata, or I am not very sure whether I am the only one getting victimized there. There has been numerous new restaurants, yes “numerous” is the keyword. The decor is fantastic, service is top notch, it’s pretty steep on pocket- all fine. But whenever the food appears, it somehow falls flat. The food taste is extremely average and the quantity is less for the amount charged. So, when this friend of mine asked me for my recommendation of a new place (less than 5 years old), which serves some good meat, I was facing a loss of words. Kolkata has got a good number of good, iconic joints, but new places serving good food and meat ? So, probably there was a gap there and this place, Macazzo came in to fill up the place.
It’s located just at the crossing of Southern avenue and the road leading towards menoka movie hall (as usual I forgot the name) and bang on your right hand side. Parking is not a problem as there (as there is KMC fee parking zone just outside), so nothing to worry. When we got in, the first thing that caught our eyes, is the queue outside. Now, I am an old fellow and I believe in joints with waiting queue outside and don’t mind waiting (provided the wait is genuine, unlike certain famous restaurants in city). The decor is smart and trendy (with lots of posters) and seating is okay-ish and the basics are basically taken cared off.
Now, my friends, with whom I was taken, they seemed to be clear on what to order. So, quickly, some chillers and a chilly hot chocolate was ordered and we were supposed to share them. “Now what the F is chilly hot chocolate ?” was the first question lingering in -non-spicy mind. But, what came was one of the most delicious hot chocolate I’ve ever tasted. With a tinge of chilly and saltiness stirred in, this is one definite dish I am looking forward for my next visit. The Cappuccino had the required layers and was a visual pleasure.
Next was the Darjeeling Pork platter and the only word that could describe it was “gigantic”. while the portion size is huge and should not be ordered for less than 4 people, the taste is somewhat monotonous after a certain point of time. The sausage, meat loaf, salami, except the bacon- all started tasting similar and the saving grace was the garlic toasts served by side. Rather, the Nasi Goreng was at the rescue. It was spicy and definitely a pleasure for the spicy souls.
The next two dishes were the showstoppers for the day. The pulled pork with fries and bacon with cheese and fries. Now, god bless the owner, who’ve dreamt of these dishes. We Kolkattans love any damn thing with a good amount of cheese and some fries. And, they both had them. But, still, if someone asks me to choose that one dish, it would be the Bacon one. I can hardly remember when was the last time, I tasted such a nice bacon-y-love. While, you may love the hotness quotient of the cheese, the plate might be too hot for you to handle, as they’ve finished the same in an oven it seemed. But, nonetheless, a visit to this place, deserves this love.
The final dish was the pulled pork sandwich. And, thankfully, the bread used was Focaccia. So, apart from the filling (same as the pulled pork dish above), bread had a distinct taste and that had made all the difference. Finally, being a bong and against all the resistance from my friends, I went ahead and ordered for the Brownie with hot chocolate and nuts and off course ice cream. And then I understood the meaning of the phrase “Gluttony is a sin”. We were full and yet had to finish the sinful dessert (we’ve paid for it after all).
Overall, I must say, the food is pretty good and portion size, as compared to price, is plain sexy. So, it’s basically a paradise for meat lover. But, the only wish was, if they’d have served some beer alongwith …… but sigh, there’s never a complete happiness in life.
Bon apetit !!!
