Deli- cake shop in The Gateway Hotel Kolkata

written by Indrajit Lahiri April 18, 2018

Let me go back around two decades and let me visualize a plump youth. Now, that kid was pretty smart. At his college, he was pretty popular among his friends and that too for a strange reason. Whenever, he needed to impress someone, he used to take her to Taj Bengal Kolkata, yes, please do not faint. The kid was from a humble middle class family and he could never afford a meal for two in Taj Bengal. Now, what he did was take his lady straight to the cake Shop, beside the banquet entrance. Somehow, he found out that the cake shop is relatively less expensive, considering the size and the brand name “Taj”. But, let’s forget him for the time being. Let’s come back to Deli, the Bakery at The Gateway Hotel Kasba.

You can check the location of Gateway Hotel Kasba here. And once you enter the lobby, Deli is just on your left side

We were invited for a pre-opening tasting session there and I’ve been there for a number of times afterwards. This blogpost is written based on those experiences.

You can check my other experience in The Gateway Hotel here

I understand many a people have got a reservation against the five star hotels for their high pricing. And, I won’t say it’s completely wrong. But, what I’ve seen over the years that bakery and confectionery is one segment, where five stars score higher over the stand-alone high-end bakeries, simple for the size of their products and the time-to-time offers that they offer. And, thus, I actually prefer going to them over the high-end stand-alone ones at times. However, enough bullshit by me. Let’s get down to the point.

You can check my experience at another bakery at a five star hotel in city here

Deli is the bakery and cake shop from The Gateway Hotel, under the management of Taj Hotels. And, the outlet is targeted at the value-for-money customers in city. The place is a take-away joint at the lobby, basically a counter and I frankly doubt whether anybody will like to consume the products there. Another good part is they’ve had a tie-up with Biswa Bangla, the WB state government initiative and has put up few goodies there.

I am an extremely value-for-money customer and the good part is, the items are pretty reasonably priced. Please do not trust me, rather check the menu card from there.

I’ve tasted few goodies from there and let’s rather talk about them now. Unlike my family, I am not a very sweet tooth person and I personally prefer savory items much more. And, when I found there are bengali styled vegetarian and non-vegetarian savory items, I was delighted. There were egg devil and Mochar Puff and also the Aloo Fulkopir Singhara. Maybe fusion food is in demand now and there was Chocolate Singhara as well. I personally don’t like Chocolate Singhara but what the hell … But, one of their best product was the Kosha Mangsho Puff. At 80/- a piece, the size is huge and taste, just perfect.

Now, my family somehow, tend to keep away from the super creamy fresh cream pastries and hence, I took back one Dry Fruits cake from Deli and surprisingly, the price of that 1 pound cake stuffed with nuts and other dry fruits was just 200/-. Now, in most of the bengali families in Kolkata, there is still the tradition of carrying a box of sweets while visiting somebody’s house and that day onwards, this cake had substituted that sweets box (the local sweet shop owner must be cursing these guys now … ).

Also, there exists a great range of cupcakes, assorted breads and Danish pastries in The Deli and I am surely going back there to try them in near future. Even on prior order, they can bake according to customer’s preference, I am told.

Hazelnut kalakand tart

So, finally, let me confess, I was that smart plump (well, that’s another modest way to not to call a fat, fat) guy and still I remain the same price sensitive customer. And, this place is sure to make mango people like me, happy …

Bon apetit !!!
