The French National Day is the anniversary of the Bastille Day on 14 July 1789. It is a turning point of the French Revolution, as well as the Fête de la Fédération celebrating the French people’s unity on 14 July 1790. Celebrations are held throughout France, as well as our city of joy, Kolkata. And I was invited to attend the same. Here’s my experience there. this year, the celebration was on 13th July 2019 at Novotel Kolkata.
The event was preceded by a wine and champagne dinner hosted by the French Consulate at Novotel Kolkata. There was this delegation flown in from Alsace and Champagne region of France. And they took us through a tour of the same.

The Consul General of France in Kolkata Mrs. Virginie Cortveal hosted the Provence inspired French National Day at the Eiffel Ballroom of the Novotel Hotel & Residences in Kolkata on Saturday the 14th July 2018. The theme of this year’s Bastille Day was the relevance of restored French heritage in Chandernagore which found reflection in the décor, the speech, and even the food. The celebrations were initiated by the arrival of the honorable Chief Guest, the Principal Secretary of Tourism, Sri Atri Bhattacharya.
The event had eminent artist Mr. Suvaprasanna Bhattacharya and the creative team from his baby, the Arts Acre. They actually had a live art corner inspired by the immortal, Van Gogh.
The evening showcased the finest of fusion of Franco Bengali flavors, from bakery and dessert specials of Chandannagar, a lovely selection of imported cheese to the popular Bandel Cheese. French classics like the crème brûlée blended with the finest of cheeses and wines curated by Novotel Executive Chef Neelabh Sahay. Frankly, I’ve always had a good experience with Novotel, while Neelabh is around and this year, it was no exception.
And I must say, there were not one, but two gastronomic showstoppers for the evening. One was the perfectly roasted whole duck and the other was the Roasted pork. also, we should not forget the lovely tangy Beef Salad. Now, the use of beef meat in cold salad is a rarity in Kolkata. But, then this event of French National Day, by The French Consulate had some nice superior stuff for us, to devour. This year, the emphasis was on the meat counter, much to my delight. And here’s a glimpse of the same. Also, I must praise team Novotel for having the fantastic Mutton Nihari.
I’m pretty choosy while it comes to desserts, and mille-feuille is my choice in the section. Needless to say, I didn’t spare the mango Rasmalai either.
I would sincerely like to thank The honorary Consulate General Of France In Calcutta for the invitation
Bon Appetit !!!
