Kolkata is having a gala time nowadays- at least in terms of events. Yesterday, we observed a great initiative by TOI and Kolkata Police. They jointly launched an event named “TOI Happy Street” to promote street-walking in Kolkata.
The stretch of park street between camac st- park st crossing till chowringhee will be a no-vehicle-zone from 630 AM to 930 AM for consecutive 6 sundays starting from 22nd February 2015. And the entire stretch will be open for common citizen and especially children for non-motor activity.
The entire stretch is divided for different activities- and how we enjoyed them.
Karate -zone:
Seldom we see such display of martial arts from a reputed school. Kids and few of their seniors practiced and demonstrated their skills just in from of the Magnolia stretch of the road.
The other slots were roller skating and the kids were a treat to the sore eyes.
There was a cycling team who were showing off their dare-devil stunts in their specified zone
There was a singing platform and school kids were enjoying that pretty much as well.
And how can we forget the selfie-king in front of the Military band ?
The Kolkata Police boxing team had put up a pretty good show too and the best part was, they were inviting little kids to put on their boxing glaves and punch the fighters- kids were happy and how.
the street being a vehicle-free zone, we also found some non-conventional kid’s vehicles like the battery operated ones
We found people walking, laughing and enjoying with their family in the sunday morning…..
Painters were in the process of beautifying the city dust-bins as well, which I personally felt good about.
So, all-in-all, it was a nice initiative and the morning was spent really well. For those who missed it, please don’t feel bad. The show is on for next 5 weekends too. every sunday for the next 5 weeks – 630-930 AM, let’s meet up.
On the 3rd day of the event, on 15th March 2015, along with the above, we found some dance groups (both Bollywood style and Salsa) performing really well. Attaching the photos…
